I'll be honest, I was planning on saying that the Grand Canyon was "a pretty good canyon, as far as canyons go" and "one of the top 5 we've seen on our trip so far", but I can't even lie, it blew me away. It's much bigger than I was expecting, maybe bigger than I could have expected from just seeing pictures.
So I'm not going to bore you with pictures (also I dropped my phone and the screen doesn't work, so if you need to call or text, use Vanessa's number), but I will give you the top 3 Road Trip Pro Tips for visiting the Grand Canyon, in order of increasing importance:
- Go all the way out to the Desert View Point, it's not the "end", it's not even close, but it's about as far as you can easily get, and there's lots of little outlooks on the way that were way less busy
- Bring snacks, there's not great food options. Dried Mango slices have a combination of sweetness and chew that go great with some quiet contemplation of the vastness of nature and maybe even a moment or two of existential panic when you realize how insignificant we can be
- Try to plan your trip for just after a snowfall. Making a snowball and hurling it in to the canyon is a treat. I got a good throw on one and it went way out there (relatively speaking) and didn't hit the rocks for at least 4 seconds. When it did it make an unexpectedly, but also incredibly satisfying pop!
